At the request of Washington, the Croatian government has decided to give surplus weapons to Kurds in Iraq free of charge, Serbian news outlet B92 reports.
According to Croatian daily newspaper Jutarnnji List, the Kurdish soldiers are to use the arms "in their fight against members of the Islamic State."
Croatia’s government made the decision on Thursday, at a closed part of its meeting, and the donation involves infantry weapons and ammunition that is supposed to end up in the hands of the Iraqi army and the Kurds in their struggle against "the bloodthirsty members of the Islamic State group," the newspaper adds.
The US have asked all NATO members to offer this kind of help and "a part stockpiles collected in this way will be given to the Iraqi army and the Kurds in northern Iraq."
Given that Croatia has had weapons surpluses "since the end of the last war in the former Yugoslavia," it decided to back up the Iraqi Kurds who are mostly armed with USSR-weapons, "so they will find the Croatian arms compatible," B92 cites Jutarnji.
In this way, Croatia has joined "a group of countries that have decided to assist in the defense of Iraq," the daily adds.
