Refugee Crisis: One Killed in Accident Near Vranje, Two Children Drown Near Kos
At least one person was killed when a truck with Macedonian license plates crashed with a bus carrying refugees on Sunday evening, near the Serbian town of Presevo. Nine of the refugees were injured in the accident, one sustaining difficult injuries, Serbian media report. All are cared for in the Vranje hospital.
The bus was taking the refugees from Presevo, which is the first Serbian town they reach after crossing over from Macedonia, to the capital Belgrade. Macedonia and Serbia are on the Balkan route of refugees and migrants, which sees thousands of mainly Middle Eastern refugees crossing daily, trying to reach northern Europe.
Meanwhile, two children were found dead on the Greek island of Kos, after drowning in their attempt to reach the island sailing from Turkey. A baby, aged between six months and a year, and a boy aged between 3 and 5 years were found on a beach, presumably after the boat carrying them from Turkey to Kos overturned. Accidents happen frequently on this stretch of the Balkan refugee route, where the refugees usually use rubber dinghies, with often inexperienced refugees told to navigate the boats.
